Irgendwo in Teil 2, 5.
- A set of social conditions has to be met as a social operating system for adopting a technology. E.g. a techno-military-industrial-scientific elite has to be in charge in order to adopt nuclear power plants as a legit technology. How does this relate to a male-dominated social structure, how does this foster certain kinds of technology? However, it is clear that the configuration of social conditions has been changed and allows other actors and dynamics to be involved in technical change. Mind blown.
- "Both Navier and Finley innovated, but their innovative work wasn't a transcendent quest for novelty, it was fundamentally structured by teir respective environments." (MacKenzie, Waijc: S. 105.)
(Wajc, MacKenzie, S. 111)
- Important: Trevor Pinch expresses critique on his very own SCOT concept. The notion of "closure" of a technology neglects that newly emerging social groups can take up this black box again and change it's outcome, appearance, design. This critique can be paired up with the critique of Rammert, noting that scial relevant groups is a problematic definition. This relates to the changes in technological development, that come along with new emerging relevant social groups, namely female engineers. They can pick up technology's design, and alter it.S ame goes of course for groups and needs that stem from people that have a higher demand for data protection etc.
*The term black box is used for a technology's stabilized design,.
- "we cannot continue to be the passive objects of some technologies (at the receiving end of medical and military technologies, for instance [...] we have to learn technical skills. if we are to learn, we have to get in there. It cannot be done at a distance." p. 131
- The article by Cynthia Cockburn from 1983 summarizes everything that is vital to the current discourse on technology.
- Waij and MacKenzie summarize the radical notion of technology being designed so as to fulfill its causes. Technology is shaped to rationalize work. Technology is shaped to repeat and stabilize male dominance?
--> "What if this technological determinism is wrong? What if the effects are in fact built into the design of workplace technology and this could be designed differently? Unemployment is seen as unfortunate by product of technological change, but the technology has been designed to eliminate human labour. " p.143
- 5. Choosing between technologies is not simply a matter of rational, economic calculations, but also influenced by the personal ambitions of managers and engineers and their efforts to shape organizational context. p. 146
- I would love to learn more about the rise of feminist printing shop culture in the 19th century, John Child wrote about this, Cockburn referred to women setting up their own printing shops in the 19th century, since they were driven out by the craftsmen. They didn't however adapt the long working hours and had male workers employed who helped with the lifting. This reminds me of the women's study course at HTW, where hours are adjusted to child care schedules, which doesn't have to manifest the women's work but could enable child care for everyone. Fathers too would like this improvement. This underlines the notion that feminism can benefit far beyond it's target group.
- Cockburn does it again: She shows a detailed story of women being driven out of labor. The differentiation fo skilled workers against unskilled workers is also a construction of gender. Skill is a direct correlate to sexual power, by it's definition it underrates women's work and deprives it of virtue. There is also a material aspect to this, units of work are political in their design. A frame or printing doesn't HAVE to be heavy und requiring strength, it is made this way. Bodily differences are not illusory. They do not have to, but they are made to matter.
- missing notes: p. 190, 182, 233, 312
- --> "technical objects and people are brought into being in a process of reciprocal definition in which objects are defined by subjects and subjects are defined by object" - Madeleine Akrich. While the power to define the other is distributed unevenly between the parties involved, like developers, artifacts and users
- This relates to Lauras quote on stereotypes and narratives! "Software developers create models of order by means of which reality is formed in order to let these formal models become reality itself. User images can be regarded as part of such ordering models. Their ascriptions participate in the process of defining gender.""
- Do artifacts have genders?
- So there is one level: Reciprocal definitions of technology and gender.
- MacKenzie and Waijcamn provide an explanation how the social shaping perspective can alter our perceptions of technology and enable a mobilization of critique --> There is no pure nature to return to, though. In a world where sex, gender, bodies and sexuality can be altered, we need to engage with technology and argue for different kinds based on social justice. In highlighting the way technologies do not have to be the way they are, the social shaping approach provides scope for human agency and policitcal intervention in creating future technologies.
- Beautiful: Modern bodies - they too are technological artifacts. (p. 278) This applies to many naturalized and internalized orders, artifacts, rules, configurations.
- This thought is as primitive as it is upshaking: Women learning to program is not only about better software, more diversity in the needs that are adressed, efficiency, less warlike tendencies. It is about breaking control of men over women, it is about women gaining independence.
- Wajcman describes how a feminist spotlight on science shouldn't rest upon recruitment, but also highlight the content. This might lead to new thoughts in the entire digital literacy and diversity movement and ideas. It's tricky, because we want to circumvent the naturalisms that come along with these ideas easily, but we also do not want to copy something that has been shaped by masculine visions of the world for centuries. But rather improve. Furthermore a focus on recruitment can quickly result in an exaggerated emphasis on the women's shortcomings, instead criticizing and alterting the work, discipline or study environment.
- Marilyn Strathern: no single meaning can in fact be given to nature or culture in Western though; there is no constant dichotomy, only a matrix of contrasts.
- Technical innovations do not emerge out of nothing, they are based on and recombinations of existing technologies. Hence, keeping women out of this experience and knowledge denies them access to innovative ressources. This implies a systemic or structural view on the self-maintaining gender gap.
- "It is the most damning indictment of skilled working-class men and their unions that they excluded women from membership and prevented them gaining competences that could have secured them a decent living" - Cockburn.
- Technological change is a process subject to struggles for control by different groups. As such, the outcomes dpeend primarily on the distribution of power and resources within society. (Wajcman, p. 23)
- The overall tendency is for technology-led changes to operate within and reinforce preexisting differences in the patterns of work. Technological change tends to further advantage those who already have recognizes skills and a degree of control over their work tasks. p. 31
- Any understandings of technology will be incomplete without the recognition that the relations of production are constructed as much out of gender divisions as class divisions. p.33
- The introduction of female labour is usually accompanied by a downgrading of the skill content of the work and a consequent fall in pay for the job p. 37
- Knowhow is a resource that gives those who posssess it a degree of actual pr potential power. Technical competence is a key source of men's power over women - of the capacity, for example, to command higher incomes and scarce jobs. p. 38
- Langdon Winner: To recognize the political dimensions in the shapes of technology does not require that we look for concious conspiracies or malicious intentions. (p. 63)
- Technology reinforces inequalities: While the overall effect of this has been the masculinization of an area that was previously a women's sphere, women who are already advantaged in society have been in a position to benefit rom recent reproductive techniques. In this area as elsewhere, technologies operate within and reinforce pre-existing social inequalities. (p. 78)
- The feminist designers' collective "Matrix" comented: Women play almost no part in making decisions about or in creating the environment. Is is a man-made environment. (Matrix 1984, p. 3, reference: Wajcman p. 120)
- --> even seemingly innocuous technological forms such as roads and bridges seemingly reinforce power relations. What is so significant about these vast technological projects is that they endure, such that for generations after Moses [the architect of low bridges] has gone, the highways and bridges he built [...] continue to give New York much of is present form. Many of his monumental structures of concrete and steel embody a systematic social inequality, a way of engineering relationships among people that, after a time, becomes just another part of the landscape. (Wajcman p.133)
- the quote above makes me think about another quality or dimension technological change and its impact on social life. The endurance of technology - is it specific? It evokes a threatening feeling for sure. Maybe this lies at a core, that technology is enduring, over generations, maybe there is even some kind of virtue attached to "old" software and technology? At least sometimes. Thinking about the Linux Kernel... any many more technological configurations that are possibly not the best pick, but they have been chosen and they will persist. Hm.
- Once we recognize the gendered nature of the design and production of the built environemnt, once it is no longer seen as fixed, we can begin to make space for women. (Wajcman, p. 135, closing remark)
- Technical expertise is a key source of power amongs men, it does no override other sources of power, such as position in the class structure.
- Wajcman claims that the search for sexual differences has increased now that women can be recruited for the army.Maybe the same is happening in the software world? Are women increasingly scrutinized bbecause of the threatening advent of women in the field? This sounds plausible to me.
- This segregation reflect that patriarchal relations are an integral part of our entire social system - education, schooling, youth cultures, mass media, family - they all transmit meanings and values that identify masculinity with machines and technological competence. These social context are intertwined and mutally reinforcing, but they aren't external forces. Infividuals actively participate in, resist or reproduce these social practices. (p. 152) - this is just a good way to describe stereotypes' effectiveness.
- --> [T]echnology is more than a set of artefacts. Technology is also a cultural product which is historically constituted by certain sorts of knowledge and social practices as well as other forms of representation. Conceiving technology as a culture reveals the extent to which an affinitiy with technology has been and is integral to the constitution of male gender identity. Masculinity and femininity are produced in relation to each other [...]" p. 158
- --> The correspondence between men and machines is thus neither essential nor immutable, and therefor the potential exists for its transformation. p. 159 - closing remark?
